Day 63 - Coyhaique to Puerto Aysen to Puyuhuapi, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

Left Coyhaique just before lunch and rode on the Reserva Nacional Rio Simpson. Great change of scenario as we rode in a very green valley which we hand not seen for a while. Then went a bit off-route to visit the Bahia Acantilada and have lunch in Aysen. The ride to the Bahia was off-road with great scenery. The Bahia was very beautiful and peaceful.
As we left Aysen it started to rain and we did over 50 kms of quite wet and muddy ripio. Not for the weak at heart. Very impressed with Continental TKC70 tires and Enduro mode on the GSA, which made what could have been very difficult quite doable. The town of Puyuhuapi is by the lake and very picturesque.

Day 62 - Puerto Rio Tranquilo to Puerto Aysen to Coyhaique, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

In the morning we visited the marble caves and left after lunch. Still a lot of ripio on this route. Actually, the Carretera Austral (Ruta 7) has been mostly ripio which makes the tourist business not so strong. Very different in Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท where they have invested heavily in asphalting the Ruta 40. On the last hour we rode together with a couple from California who just got married and this is how they decided to spend their honeymoon. How cool is that ?

Day 61 - Los Antiguos, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท to Chile Chico to Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

Although we are still in Patagonia, we exchanged the Argentinian pampa by the Chilean colorful lakes and ice-capped mountains.
Outstanding scenery, one of our best so far on the motorcycle, on the most difficult road we have done.

Day 57 - El Calafate, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

El Calafate, the name of the town is derived from a little bush with yellow flowers and dark blue berries that is very common in Patagonia. The berry, once eaten, guaranteed your return to Patagonia. We have had Pisco with Calafate and plenty of Austral beer with Califate so we will be back for sure.
We decided to stop a couple of nights in this beautiful town and walk the streets enjoying mingling with the local and many tourists that stop there.
Loved the mountain town feel, the many specialty shops and the coffe place we found at the end of the day with amazing local chocolates.

Day 56 - Puerto Natales, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ to El Calafate, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Our ride from Puerto Natales, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ to El Calafate, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท.
Very beautiful sunny day where in the beginning of the day we rode most of the time bordering the Torres del Paine national park. We arrived at El Calafate towards end of the afternoon and hurried to see Perito Moreno Glacier inside the Los Glaciers National Park.
The ride was beautiful but it all got eclipsed by the visit to the Glacier which is jaw-dropping.

Day 55 - Torres del Paine Puerto Natales, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

Today we went to National Park Torres del Paine and visited Grey Lake and the Grey Glacier.
The park is very beautiful and the glacier and lake are amazing. The color of the lake is grey because of sediments that do not allow sun to go into the lake ... this means no plants or animals survive in the lake.

Day 54 - Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales, Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

We woke up to a very rainy day but saw that there was a 3 hour window that the wind would blow the bad clouds away. We got a glorious sunny day for our short ride of 250 kms (155 miles). It was quite cold and there was lots of wind as most of the ride is through the Patagonia pampa.

Good day’s ride. Over 400 miles (650 kms).
Highlights were the ride through Paso Giribaldi as we left Ushuaia, the ferry crossing and our first longer ride in Chile as we rode next to the Strait of Magellan.

Day 51 - Rio Gallegos to Ushuaia, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Long day as we had over 200 miles (500 kms) to cover plus 2 borders and a ferry ride. We did make it to Ushuaia towards the end of the day but still had time to go to the National Park and take some photos, specially the ones at the End of the Road.

Day 46 - Catriel to San Carlos Bariloche, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Some serious scenery as we got within 160 kms (100 miles) of Bariloche. The 237 is in very good condition and we rode close to a number of dykes of the Limay river. Great day of riding with temperatures around 60-65F (15-17C) and sunny.

Day 45 - Mendoza to Catriel, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Today it was all about doing many miles in the shortest time possible as we needed to ride in two days to San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท, so we chose the fastest way. Lots of straights, not very great scenery as all concentration was needed to push the average speed up.
We did enter Patagonia.

Day 44 - Famatina to Mendoza, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Highlights were the Quebrada of Miranda, hundreds of kms of “badenes” (like a valley on the road so that rivers may wash through), riding with the Andes mountains ever present on the right and the city of Mendoza.

Bo, Dave and Tim arrive in Ushuaia

We had a few bumps along the way, but we still made it within our allowed time frame. I got sick in San Christobal, Mexico. Armando had to go hire a doctor to come to the room to treat me. It cost us a day extra there. I fell through a staircase at a remote tribe on the Rio Napo river in Coca, Ecuador and hurt my leg. Armando had to wheel me into a military hospital in Coca and get me x-rayed (the hospital was straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.) That cost us another day, and about 2 weeks on crutches. I crashed on Ruta 40 in Argentina in some rocks and hurt the other leg. That didn't cost us any time, just some embarrassment. Dave's bike got hit by a drunk at 4 am in El Calafate. That cost us another day, but it was repairable (temporarily). Other than small stuff, we're trucking along. No worries.

Day 43 - Cafayate to Famatina, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Today’s ride from Cafayate to Famatina, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท on Ruta 40, which is “the longest route in Argentina and one of the longest in the world alongside such routes as U.S. Route 66, Canada's Trans-Canada Highway, and Australia's Stuart Highway, more than 5,000 kilometres (3,100 mi) long.”
290 miles (460 kms) in five and half hours.
Long straightaways as we rode most of the time in the valley. Good views in some areas of interesting color mountains.

Day 42 - Salta to Cafayate, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท

Today we did a short 3 hour ride from Salta to Cafayate, Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท .
But what a ride it was. It is in the Ruta del Vino so we of course saw many wine plantations but the most striking part of the ride was the Nature Reserve Quebrada de las Conchas where rocks of different shapes and colors dressed up for our viewing pleasure.

Day 36. - La Paz to Road of Death to Coroico, Bolivia ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ด

The Death Road is between La Paz and Coroico, Bolivia ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ด.
But before you get there you have to cross La Cumbre which is the highest point on the road between these two cities. It is at 14,783 feet (4,506 meters).
It is the starting point for many of the bicycle tours that eventually do the Road of Death.
The views are amazing ...
