Day 81 - Vina del Mar to Santiago, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
Spent most of the day in the picturesque city of Viรฑa Del Mar bird watching and having unch by the sea. At the end of the afternoon made the 90 minute ride through the vine country into Santiago where we finished our Ride to the End of the World.

Day 80 - Copiapo to Vina del Mar, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
Quite long ride of over 700 kms (460 miles) where we rode most of the day very close to the Pacific Ocean.
Copiapรณ has a quite a lot of artistic graffiti.
Temperatures swung a lot and we had to add and take out clothes a number of times. Got about 90 minutes of pretty heavy and cold fog.
Went to eat lunch by the sea in La Serena, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ.
Arrived in Viรฑa del Mar already at dark dusk.

Day 79 - Antofagasta to Copiapo, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
There are two road options to do, one is the Ruta 5 through the desert and the other is the Ruta 1 by the coast. When we came north as we wanted to visit the Hand in the Desert we took Ruta 5. So this time we took Ruta 1 and were totally blown over.
We started at sea level at Antofagasta climbed to 6,000+ feet where we rode for an hour, came back down to sea level at Paposo, then climbed again at Taltal back to 2,000+ feet and then came down to sea level at Chaรฑaral.
The views were breathtaking and I said “Wow” many times on these 500+ kms.
In my opinion, this day makes the top 5 for the whole trip, in terms of riding a motorcycle experience and scenery.
Enjoy !

Before leaving the San Pedro de Atacama region, still visited the Mirador Piedra Del Coyote in Valle de la Luna. Saw the largest copper mine in the world in the distance. Arrival to Antofagasta is always amazing. We got a room with a view which during sunset was a beautiful bay with Peruvian Pelicans.

Day 2 in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ.
Another tour with Flamingo Travel. This time it was a half day tour and they came and got us st 5 in the morning so we could get to the geyser field before sunrise and see it rise there.
Temperature was -4C when we got to the fields. The Parque Geotermico Geyser del Tatio is the third largest in the world after Yellowstone and one in Russia.
We also went up to 4,300 meters and I enjoyed a quick dip in the geothermal pool.
We saw lots of animals, which we loved and enjoyed s visit to a local town.

Day 72 - Santiago to Valparaiso to Vina del Mar La Sebastiana, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
The way from Santiago to Valparaiso was on highway. Lots of traffic as it was a Saturday and both Valparaiso and Viรฑa Del Mar are favorite weekend spots. Quite a lot of vineyards on the way.
Loved the colors and the large inclines in Valparaiso which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here we also visited La Sebastiana and its artistic surroundings. At the end of the day rode by the beaches of Viรฑa Del Mar. It was a day where we probably saw the most diverse scenery. We were even given a front row seat in a forest fire where they needed helicopters to contain the flames.

Day 71 - Santiago, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
“Surprising, cosmopolitan, energetic, sophisticated and worldly, Santiago is a city of syncopated cultural currents, madhouse parties, expansive museums and top-flight restaurants. No wonder 40% of Chileans call the leafy capital city home.
It's a wonderful place for strolling, and each neighborhood has its unique flavor and tone. Head out for the day to take in the museums, grand architecture and pedestrian malls of the Centro, before an afternoon picnic in one of the gorgeous hillside parks that punctuate the city's landscape. Nightlife takes off in the sidewalk eateries, cafes and beer halls of Barrios Brasil, Lastarria and Bellavista, while as you head east to well-heeled neighborhoods like Providencia and Las Condes, you'll find tony restaurants and world-class hotels.
With a growing economy, renovated arts scene and plenty of eccentricity to spare, Santiago is an old-guard city on the cusp of a modern-day renaissance.”

Day 69 - Cunco to Santiago, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
Our second longest ride during our trip, where we did over 450 miles (725 kms) mainly on highway. There were three common things on this trip, interesting bridges, vast areas of different type of farmed goods and lots of different vehicles carrying these farmed goods towards Santiago for consumption by the over 6 million people who live in the capital city.

Day 68 - Cunco National Park Conguillio, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
We visited the beautiful Parque Nacional Conguillรญo, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ with a guide.
Helmut was great and drove us around (more than 200 kms) and showed us the nicest sights.
We walked over 7 miles (11 kms on the day)
It was an amazing experience that we will treasure forever.
The main highlights were Rainbow ๐ Lake, Llaima Volcano and the beautiful araucarias (or monkey puzzle) trees, but there were many other amazing sights.
“Araucaria araucana (commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, piรฑonero, or Chilean pine) is an evergreen tree growing to 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) in diameter and 30–40 m (100–130 ft) in height. It is native to central and southern Chile, western Argentina. Because of the longevity of this species, it is described as a living fossil. It is also the national tree of Chile. Its conservation status was changed to Endangered by the IUCN in 2013 due to the dwindling population caused by logging, forest fires, and grazing.”

Day 66 - San Carlos Bariloche to Vila Angostura to San Martin de los Andes, Argentina ๐ฆ๐ท
Today was a short ride, 190 Kms (115 miles) that took us nearly six hours to do as we kept stopping to look at the scenery and take pictures.
We saw many motorcyclists as there was an Harley Davidson event and there was the Round One of the Motocross World Championship in La Angostura.
This is known as the Camino de los Siete Lagos (Road of the Seven Lakes) which crosses two national parks (Nahuel Huapi and Lanin). There are many lakes in the area but the seven most well known and which give the name to this road are:
Correntoso, Espejo, Escondido, Machรณnico, Falkner, Villarino and Lรกcar.
Google says it should take one hour and forty-five minutes. It took us much longer and we loved every minute of it. And yes, we did eat chocolate in some of them.

Day 63 - Coyhaique to Puerto Aysen to Puyuhuapi, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
Left Coyhaique just before lunch and rode on the Reserva Nacional Rio Simpson. Great change of scenario as we rode in a very green valley which we hand not seen for a while. Then went a bit off-route to visit the Bahia Acantilada and have lunch in Aysen. The ride to the Bahia was off-road with great scenery. The Bahia was very beautiful and peaceful.
As we left Aysen it started to rain and we did over 50 kms of quite wet and muddy ripio. Not for the weak at heart. Very impressed with Continental TKC70 tires and Enduro mode on the GSA, which made what could have been very difficult quite doable. The town of Puyuhuapi is by the lake and very picturesque.

Day 62 - Puerto Rio Tranquilo to Puerto Aysen to Coyhaique, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
In the morning we visited the marble caves and left after lunch. Still a lot of ripio on this route. Actually, the Carretera Austral (Ruta 7) has been mostly ripio which makes the tourist business not so strong. Very different in Argentina ๐ฆ๐ท where they have invested heavily in asphalting the Ruta 40. On the last hour we rode together with a couple from California who just got married and this is how they decided to spend their honeymoon. How cool is that ?

El Calafate, the name of the town is derived from a little bush with yellow flowers and dark blue berries that is very common in Patagonia. The berry, once eaten, guaranteed your return to Patagonia. We have had Pisco with Calafate and plenty of Austral beer with Califate so we will be back for sure.
We decided to stop a couple of nights in this beautiful town and walk the streets enjoying mingling with the local and many tourists that stop there.
Loved the mountain town feel, the many specialty shops and the coffe place we found at the end of the day with amazing local chocolates.

Very beautiful sunny day where in the beginning of the day we rode most of the time bordering the Torres del Paine national park. We arrived at El Calafate towards end of the afternoon and hurried to see Perito Moreno Glacier inside the Los Glaciers National Park.
The ride was beautiful but it all got eclipsed by the visit to the Glacier which is jaw-dropping.

Day 55 - Torres del Paine Puerto Natales, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
Today we went to National Park Torres del Paine and visited Grey Lake and the Grey Glacier.
The park is very beautiful and the glacier and lake are amazing. The color of the lake is grey because of sediments that do not allow sun to go into the lake ... this means no plants or animals survive in the lake.

Day 54 - Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales, Chile ๐จ๐ฑ
We woke up to a very rainy day but saw that there was a 3 hour window that the wind would blow the bad clouds away. We got a glorious sunny day for our short ride of 250 kms (155 miles). It was quite cold and there was lots of wind as most of the ride is through the Patagonia pampa.

Today it was all about doing many miles in the shortest time possible as we needed to ride in two days to San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina ๐ฆ๐ท, so we chose the fastest way. Lots of straights, not very great scenery as all concentration was needed to push the average speed up.

Bo, Dave and Tim arrive in Ushuaia
We had a few bumps along the way, but we still made it within our allowed time frame. I got sick in San Christobal, Mexico. Armando had to go hire a doctor to come to the room to treat me. It cost us a day extra there. I fell through a staircase at a remote tribe on the Rio Napo river in Coca, Ecuador and hurt my leg. Armando had to wheel me into a military hospital in Coca and get me x-rayed (the hospital was straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.) That cost us another day, and about 2 weeks on crutches. I crashed on Ruta 40 in Argentina in some rocks and hurt the other leg. That didn't cost us any time, just some embarrassment. Dave's bike got hit by a drunk at 4 am in El Calafate. That cost us another day, but it was repairable (temporarily). Other than small stuff, we're trucking along. No worries.

290 miles (460 kms) in five and half hours.

Day 35 - Copacabana to La Paz, Bolivia ๐ง๐ด
Most of the time we were around Lake Titicaca on the Bolivia side.
Rain all the way and nearly 2 hours to get to hotel once we arrived at the outskirts of the city.
Traffic was very heavy and condition of the roads in the rain makes it very tricky.
But ...
Any of that was nothing compared to the crossing of the Strait of Tiquina. The rain changes the game because it wets the wood and makes life much tougher.

Another epic riding day as we crossed the high plains.
The most amazing thing is how many different sceneries we rode through in this day.
It was also the day we went over 15,000 feet and saw vicuรฑas in the wild.
We encountered many different climate changes and even had a bit of frozen rain.
The road was in the vast majority in great condition but we did catch a number of parts that it was rough.
All of these components put together made it a day not to be forgotten where we were able to take some emblematic photos.

Day 28 - Pisco to Huacachina to Nazca to Camana, Peru ๐ต๐ช
Another fantastic day on the road (on the top 3 in my opinion). It was over 12 hours riding through some majestic terrain.
In the morning our objective was to get to Nazca and see the famous Nazca lines.
After lunch in Nazca, we made our way towards the coast where the road cuts through huge dunes with the sea on the side for hundreds of miles.
It is the way trucks transverse the country so you overtake and cross hundreds of them. Every maneuver is different and you have to be on top of your game all the time as one mistake can cost dearly.
It is an epic ride.

Day 27 - Huaraz to Pisco, Peru ๐ต๐ช
We passed through Lima, Peru ๐ต๐ช which is the capital and it is a nightmare to go through it as there is no bypass of this very busy city so the heavy traffic transversing the country passes downtown Lima. It can take up to 4-6 hours if you hit at the wrong time of the day. It took us 2.5 hours.
The rest of the ride was “tranquilo” as we enjoyed entering the south of Lima section where there are many beach towns with high concentration of holiday resorts.
Riding in the south of Peru is in my opinion much nicer than the north and it seems to be a different country where it is much less poor.
The city of Pisco, Peru ๐ต๐ชis one of the more colorful and picturesque we have seen.

Day 13 - Liberia to Uvita, CR ๐จ๐ท
Today we rode the all day in the same country and one that we enjoyed a lot.
We wanted to get to Uvita quite early so we could still enjoy some time in the beach so we had an early breakfast and were on the road at 7:30am.
Riding in Costa Rica is a true pleasure as the vegetation is so varied and you are constantly surrounded by beautiful mountains and some volcanoes.
Our first stop was at Jaco beach, which is defined as a beautiful, energetic beach town is known for its carefree party atmosphere. We arrived quite early for the party going crowd so we did not see a lot of people. We stopped the bikes close to the beach and went to a cafe where we had a mid-morning snack and also took some photos.
We then rode the rest of the way very close to the ocean and now and then were presented with beautiful sea views.
We still stopped at Diminical beach but found it a bit too wild of a scene for us.
We eventually found an hotel and took a dip in the pool to cool down as we had reached quite high temperatures.
We then went to the beach which is part of a national park and spent the afternoon flying the drone (Bo), swimming (Dave) and walking (Armando).
I did not like the color of the sea water so decided not to go for a swim, however, my walk through the park was outstanding as had the forest on one side and the sea on the other. Also enjoyed watching people of all competences surfing.
Took hundreds of photos. Some of which are attached on this post.
That evening the dinner was surprisingly very good specially the pasta with seafood.

Day 12 - Chinandega, NI ๐ณ๐ฎ to Liberia, CR ๐จ๐ท
After our long day at the border entering Nicaragua ๐ณ๐ฎ, we felt it would be wise to leave early as we still had many miles to travel, go through Managua and also exit the country.
As we approached Managua, things started to change radically and we could not believe our eyes. There were nice houses now on the side of the road, there was a lot of activity happening with cars, buses, taxis, motorcycles and people all around. The quality and size of gas stations improved considerably and we felt we were in a different country. There is clearly a major difference of rural and city Nicaragua ๐ณ๐ฎ. Much more than any other country we had been to.
We did not go to downtown Managua but the little we saw we liked.
The way from Managua to the border we made it on a road that was very close to Lake Nicaragua and we stopped a couple of times to take photos and have lunch.
The lake has a very strong wing that blows from East to West and large amounts of the land bordering the lake is filled with windmills of the electrical kind.
Being on the south side of the lake and looking at the two islands with volcanoes in the middle of the lake will be a memory I will keep forever.
We also had the opportunity to interact with some locals as we asked Maria to cook us a typical Nicaragua meal which she did (fried chicken with yuca and cheese). We also gave a ball to a very nice boy and played some soccer with him.
We would have loved to just stay there, overlooking the lake, longer but we still had to cross the border to Costa Rica ๐จ๐ท.
Leaving Nicaragua ๐ณ๐ฎ was a long process with a new twist which was authorization from the police to leave the country. They took our passports away and we had to wait for about 20 minutes at which time he came back and said everything was ok.
After 90 minutes (new record to leave a country) we moved towards Costa Rica ๐จ๐ท and here we had to do immigration (easy), customs (long as usual) and buy insurance (also long process). Eventually we made it out and had one hour of riding time before the sun set so we opted to stay in Liberia, Costa Rica ๐จ๐ท at a very nice hotel called Villa Hermosa. Here we were able to interact with Costa Rica people and we liked it a lot. Very friendly. In this specific case the hotel belonged to a family that worked together (Dad constructed it, Mom cooked and son managed it) to make our stay very nice. For dinner we had a Mom cooked meal and there was even selection of different breakfast meals. One of my favorite things during this stay was to sit on a hanging chair, stroking Tiara the resident dog and catch up on the internet while sipping a beer.

Day 11 - San Miguel, SV ๐ธ๐ป to Choluteca, HN ๐ญ๐ณ to Chinandega, NI ๐ณ๐ฎ
We left early from San Miguel as we had to do 4 borders and cross an entire country (Honduras).
All the roads we travelled in El Salvador are in great condition and in general we have found the country in better condition than we expected.
We also liked the people who are quite friendly and humble.
We stopped at the border and the exit from El Salvador ๐ธ๐ป was quite easy but we met the more pushy “helpers” so far in this border. They kept saying we needed them as the process in Honduras would be very difficult. We kept pushing them away.
As we arrived at the Honduras border we were able to park the bikes very close to the immigration and customs building and lucky for us, in the shade.
The immigration process was very fast and uneventful but the customs was a nightmare. I am sure someone defines the most complex process they can think of and then they give it to 10 other people to make it even more complex and that is what becomes the final process.
I am sure the customs officer entered our names and bike information into 4 different forms (we also had to supply 2 different sets of photocopies). And then when I thought she was finished she enters all of it again in a computer. We took over two hours. And we still had to travel through Honduras, and reach what we expected to be the most difficult border, Nicaragua ๐ณ๐ฎ.
We traveled fine through Honduras ๐ญ๐ณ, on a much better than expected road and as we were nearing lunch time we looked for a place to eat. We were close to the capital Choluteca and just outside town we saw this beautiful hotel where we stopped and had an excellent meal. We were the only people there and had the fortune of seeing a number of iguanas ๐ฆ that roamed the grounds. The iguanas mating on a coconut tree ๐ด photo I took will probably be one of the most interesting ones we have taken so far.
Being there was also an opportunity to speak to some locals and I liked their sympathy and empathy with strangers (very different from the neighbors on the south).
Although we were having a lot of fun on a gorgeous day at a beautiful hotel, we needed to get going.
After a number of hours riding we arrived at the Honduras ๐ญ๐ณ and Nicaragua ๐ณ๐ฎ border.
Leaving Honduras ๐ญ๐ณ was lengthy (just slow and drawn out process) but straight forward.
The first interaction we had with Nicaraguans was at the fumigation station. This is another part of the process in some borders where they spray your vehicle with some type of chemical. Of course you have to pay something and wait some more in line for them to enter info about your bike, sign in triplicate and give you a paper.
During this interaction I asked the guy in the office if he could throw away some unnecessary papers I had with me. He looked at me and said no. I just stood there, speechless. After I processed what has never happened to me before, I turned around and thought this will not be an easy country to visit. There were other occasions where I interacted with Nicaraguans and my overall feeling is that they are by far the most aggressive and abrasive people of the countries we have travelled so far. They are also the poorest and it is the country where I was riding much more attentive to things that were happening around us.
The process through the border was complex and slow and officers were in general not courteous.
It was the only country where we had to open every single bag for them to look through and no, we could not park the bikes in the shade while we did this. And yes, we were told numerous times, the process has to be done between an officer and the specific individual so no, I was not allowed to give the documents of Bo and Dave to the officer even though they were standing just next to me. They had to hand them themselves.
Bottom line, we spent another 2 hours, had one more process than other borders so far which was getting insurance for the bikes and left the border with about one hour of sun left in the day.
That meant we needed to find an hotel fast and a town quite close. We opted for Chinandega and made our way there.
Riding on the road just after the border is very different from our experience later through Managua (the capital). Here people live in very bad conditions (by far the worst we encountered). There are no houses and they live in shacks made from zinc or even pieces of trees. It felt similar to riding through the poorest areas of Africa. In other countries in Central America there are buses, and taxis as well as motorcyclists that take people around. Here there are only bicycles that have been fitted with some type of a seat where the rider can take a passenger.
Every where we passed people stopped doing whatever they were doing and watched us. We usually lift our hand as a form of saying hello. We got few responses back.
The sun was dipping fast, the dark was getting stronger so we pushed on.
We arrived at our hotel already at night and were able to put our bikes in safety of a closed parking lot in the nick of time.
That night we asked them to make us food at the hotel and bring some from restaurants near by. We just did not feel comfortable to leave the hotel.
The hotel experience was very nice as our rooms were on the ground floor just next to where we had our dinner and WiFi speed was good. We were also taken care of very well by three ladies that helped us choose our food and made it themselves in the hotel.
The food was very tasty and the beer helped us relax of a long and eventful day.

Day 10 - Guatemala City, GT ๐ฌ๐น to San Miguel, SV ๐ธ๐ป
Today we travelled 230 miles (370 kms) and did a border post where we had to leave Guatemala and enter El Salvador.
We had a very nice breakfast where we able to see once more the enchanted view. There was no fog so it was very beautiful.
The road to the border is in very good condition and our intention was to do El Salvador in one day. But as we have started to learn the process in these Central American borders are not very simple and we take hours to get through and this is with minimal traffic as there is an agreement between 4 of the countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua) and people from these countries have free access to the others. The biggest time consumer is at customs where we have to get the temporary importation authorization of the motorcycles. They have to fill the same information multiple times in a plentitude of forms.
We eventually made it through and entered El Salvador where we were impressed by the American influence in the country. The large American household names are very well represented and we stopped in a food court type of place where we had the Burger King whopper and I also had a strawberry milkshake from Boston Company.
The road was in excellent condition and we made good time to San Miguel, SV where we decided to spend the night. Finding an hotel was not easy and we ventured into some shady neighborhoods but eventually we found a taxi driver that gave us a good and affordable hotel name and we parked the bikes. The hotel had a pool and a siting area where we drank dome beers and spoke about the day’s ride.
But before arriving at the hotel we donated a soccer ball (offered by Teague and Lindsay Griffin) to Rene, a young Salvadoran. He had his sister and his dad with him and we took some pictures to remember each other.
For the evening we went into a barbecue place where Bo had the beef, Dave the chicken and I had the prawns.
We went back to the hotel and caught up with the daily messages and social network updates.

Day 9 - Huehuetenango to Guatemala City, GT ๐ฌ๐น
Today it was a short day in terms of miles, about 150 miles (250 Kms) but very long as we rode in rural Guatemala ๐ฌ๐น where the quality of the roads is not very good and a lot of times we rode on packed dirt.
What a beautiful day it was, one of my favorites as we rode away from the beaten path and visited places majority of tourists do not go to. It was a day of constant ups and downs with amazing photo opportunities with the sun shining just right and roads that snaked into themselves so I could stay a bit behind and take pictures of Bo and Dave from above.
We had the opportunity of stopping in a small rural village with about 5 houses that also sell stuff and interact with a local family. Bo took out his drone which was a hit and brought a number of curious people from their to the street to see it hover and film.
We were also able to view Guatemala City from afar and plot our way through the city which actually was easier than we thought. As there were not a lot of town with good hotel coverage from Guatemala City to the border we decided to stop early in a nice hotel just out of the city.
We were intrigued by its name (Vista Encantada which means Enchanted View) and chose it over others.
The hotel is actually inside a closed community and because of the high walls you cannot see any view until they open up the big gates so it was actually a surprise.
The view is magnificent with a lake (Amatitlan) surrounded by a town and with a number of volcanoes (Water, Fire, Acatenango) on the background.
The hotel is run by a very nice lady and her grown children and that evening she made us an home made chicken soup that we will remember for a long time.
I still had a lot of adrenalin from the day’s ride and wanted to see the lake up close so hot back on the bike and went down the hill to see the town and lake. Very nice.
Still had quite an adventure doing some heavy-duty off-roads up the hill at night in the way back but that is a story for another day with some beers. Let’s just say there was some panel beating of panniers the next morning.
